First of all, Hi!

So I have been at UCLA for only a week or so and I have tried a number of ways to get the six miles from home to office during rush hour. Today and yesterday I tried the.dreaded freeway, because I literally live a stone's throw away (is that how that is written?) from it. Like when I drop buddy at daycare, I am staring at the wall of the freeway.

Anyways, daycare to parked in 20 minutes. 20 minutes. That is nothing you guys. I am literally chilling in the subaru, drinking my coffee and writing to you guys with time to spare.

State of the Union

Obama killed it in the State of the Union.

It was a great speech - heavy on the gambling metaphors, heavy on the RahRahAmericaGetIt!, heavy on the as President, here's what I can do and all of you squabbling over the republican nomination can just keep doing what you're doing, I'm going to keep running this country.

I wish he would have been doing this all along - you know?

He started with talking about how things were when when he took office - how the previous administration lost 4 million jobs and in the last 22 months he has gained 3 million jobs, how they got us in this mess and he's been slowly getting us out of it. But, at least he's doing it now. Right?

I'm going to find some time this year to do some campaign work for Obama. I love him and I'm proud of him as our president.

This past weekend was a pretty nice and chill weekend. Friday we just hung around here and watched a movie. We're getting pretty good at this whole watching movies thing! That's at least two this year!
Saturday, Babe took Buddy to her little swimming class and I worked. Then, we went to dinner at a restaurant right around here called The Wood. The food is pretty good but the real draw is that they have excellent and delicious beers on tap for $3 during happy hour. Which is from 4-7, which is really the only appropriate time (4pm I mean) to take a toddler with you to a restaurant. Anything past 6 and you're messing with people's date night.
Sunday, the in-laws came over and we went out to breakie. We took the Buddy to Denny's for her first time and judging by the way she ate everything in sight, it won't be the last.
We watched two stupid football games. UGH. Patriots and Giants. Even if I lived in NYC still I would be annoyed. I guess this is how the rest of the world feels about the Yankees, but I love the Yankees so I don't feel that way. Inconsistent? You betcha.
I managed to get a lot of work done this weekend without feeling sad about it. When I was in my 20s I worked practically every weekend, to get ahead and stay on top of stuff. Around the time I turned 30 I pretty much was over it. Now, that I'm trying to prove myself at new jobs I can see I'll be doing more of it again. So far, so good.

Weather

Raining here today which means people drive very poorly.
More importantly, it means there ought to be some snow on the mountains which is where we're going this weekend!

I've been watching the American Idol try outs. I love them. I never really watch the whole show - I mean don't get me wrong, I have in season's past, but like the last time I did I think it was Ruben Studdard or something like that? But boy do I love the try outs. And I think J-Lo is just so pretty it hurts me to look at her.

Work

Part time in the office, part time consulting for two organizations means I'm working a lot. And do you hear me complaining? No and you won't. Not for awhile anyway. I'm so happy to have a job where I am meeting interesting people and doing interesting work. My blog schedule is screwed up though. Tomorrow I should be able to toss a numbers at you in the am. We'll see.

What a nice three day weekend! Ang came up yesterday and I took advantage of her being here to organize my closet so I can get ready to work outside of the home! I've been averaging two days a week with meetings, so that means I've been wearing those same two outfits every week and the rest of the week jeans and black tshirts. So, I now know what I have to wear to work in an office. It will start three days a week this week, then in mid-march go to five days a week. Chances are good I'll have a meeting at USC at least one of those other two days a week until then, if not both days. BTW last week was a productive and terrific work week. It feels great to meet with people and talk to them instead of just working in your house at the kitchen table. Not complaining!! Just saying.
Had some peeps over to watch the Green Bay Packer game on Sunday. Made some wings, two kinds. That sucked though. The wings were good. Aaron Rodgers apparently has been too busy making commercials to practice his sport I guess.
Friday and Saturday we did the date swap with our pals who live around the corner. Friday I went over to their place and "watched" their two babies. Which really meant sit on the comfy chair, read my book and drink a beer since their babies were snoozing soundly.
Saturday, we dropped Princess Buddy at their place at 5:30 and went out to dinner at City Tavern in downtown Culver City. I'll probably yelp it later and link to the review. Beer was good, food was aight, service was hit or miss. We had a GREAT time though. After we returned home, we tried watching Hangover 2 but that movie is just not good.

This past weekend, the first of 2012, was terrific. Babe took buddy to her first swimming lesson and boy oh boy, imagine the cuteness.
I worked out during that swimming class and boy oh boy imagine the shock to my body! Was the best 8 minutes of my year. Just kidding, I worked out for longer than 8 minutes.
We took an hour long walk on the Ballona Creek bike path on Sunday. It was in the 80s. So you know. Hot.
On Friday night, we decided to try to go out to dinner and it was pretty successful! The buddy is almost big enough to sit for one hour, but we took her for a few walks to stretch her out a bit. We hit up Casa Sanchez around the corner for some sit down mexican food. It was a little fancy! Dang! The food was absolutely delicious.
We watched at least two football games, and as you know the only good one was the Steelers v. Broncos. I am no fan of Tebow, but I hate the Steelers so there you go.
On Saturday, we drove the forty-five minutes to go see Babe's oldest friend and his lady wife. We dined in Aliso Viejo along with literally every other person who lives there. The mega entertainment complex in which we found our dinner is exactly what you think of when you think of Orange County. No less that fifty restaurants, a movie theater, a Barnes and Noble, PetSmart, and on and on. The food was very good, though. We ate at a Peruvian restaurant and there was live music and lots of other people with babies. Thumbs up!

Strata!

I'm always a little jealous of those beautiful food blogs that feature giant pictures of their food taken with real cameras instead of phone cameras. So, I used the Canon to photo the Strata I made on Christmas morning. I hope it looks beautiful and not gross. Here's the recipe, with my adaptions of course. You can find the original here.

Arugula, Bacon, and Gruyère Bread Pudding
1 1/2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup heavy cream (I used half and half)
5 large eggs
6 bacon slices
1 large shallot, finely chopped (I used a half of an onion)
3 garlic cloves, chopped
7 ounces baby arugula or baby spinach (6 1/2 cups)
6 cups cubed (1-inch) country-style bread (1 pound)
5 1/2 ounces Gruyère cheese, coarsely grated (1 1/2 cups) (I used Gouda cuz I love it)

Preheat oven to 375°F with rack in middle. Butter a 2-qt shallow baking dish.

Whisk together milk, cream, eggs, and 1/4 teaspoon each of salt and pepper in a large bowl.

Cook bacon in a 12-inch heavy skillet over medium heat, turning occasionally, until crisp. Transfer with tongs to paper towels to drain, then coarsely crumble.

Pour off all but 1 tablespoon fat from skillet. Increase heat to medium-high and cook shallot and garlic, stirring constantly, until golden, about 1 minute. Gradually add arugula and cook, stirring, until it wilts.

Stir arugula mixture, bacon, bread, and cheese into custard. Transfer to baking dish and cover with foil. Bake 30 minutes, then remove foil and bake until golden in spots, about 10 minutes more.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The Good

In San Diego this week! It is absolutely beautiful here. Get to spend time with the family and the buddy. Buddy gets to spend time with the family. Win, win, win.
Found some good after Christmas deals, but haven't spent too much money so that is also good.

The Bad

Dude, I haven't gotten as much work done as I thought I would. This is entirely my fault. I am terrible at working at Starbucks. SIGH. Oh well. I'm having a good week, like I said, so I can't really complain.

The Ugly

The California Golden Bear football team just isn't very good. There are no two ways about it. I mean bowl game, yes. But we just stink at football. Oh well, there's always next year.

I am still working on my 111 list, guys. Don't give up on me. I know you're dying to read it.
Had our first Christmas waking up at home and that was really really nice and really fun. Buddy slept in til 8:30, and we all opened our presents. It was about 75 degrees outside so we played outside for awhile, then took the quick 1 and a half hour drive to Hemet to see the in-laws.
Buddy got a lot of nice presents this year, including a pony to ride on and a drum set with all sorts of instruments inside. Yah! She's having fun. She's going to be 18 months old tomorrow!
Yesterday, I drove down to San Diego because Buddy's day care is closed this week and I have to get some work done. So, I probably did about three hours today which is better than if I had been home alone with Buddy. Then I would have gotten about zero hours done.
Tomorrow is my Dad's birthday! I'm taking him to the bowl game so we can watch the California Golden Bears in action. It's my first bowl game, don't know if it's his.

111 things about 2011 - can I do it?

The year started off with a bang. Actually, I have very little recollection of January and what I did on New Years Eve. That has to be a first.
In the spring time we went to Wisconsin to see my Grama.
My last day of work at NYU was in the end of May.
I saw the Statue of Liberty up close for the first time.
I brewed beer with my pals for the first time.
I went to the Bronx Zoo and saw the tigers and bears frolic in the snow.
We basically took a victory lap around NYC and saw everyone we loved and sights we hadnt really seen before.
We celebrated buddy's first birthday in Brooklyn with fifty or so of our closest friends.
Then we moved to California.
I've visited several cities in California, like San Diego, Hemet, Oxnard, Pasadena and Idylwild.
I've attended two weddings this year.
One was the wedding of the century in Washington DC.
I read about fifty books this year, some of them were very good and many were very bad.
The funniest one was the Tina Fey book. The other funny ones
I celebrated my thirty fourth birthday.
Babe and I celebrated our fifteenth anniversary of going out.
I welcomed a new niece and nephew into my life.
I got a new car!
I found a neat spot to live in, in beautiful west LA.
I saw two movies in the theater this year - Black Swan and the Harry Potter #7, P2.
I applied to forty eight jobs.
I got two.
Much like 9 years ago when we took a one way trip to the east coast, we took a one way flight from NYC to San Diego.
I sat outside today on Christmas Eve and it was seventy five degrees outside.
I am going to wake up at my own house on Christmas morning for the first time, ever.
I met several friends new babies. And some of my pals welcomed number two into their lives!
I watched the same ten episodes of Yo Gabba Gabba about nine hundred times.
I befriended the 94 year old lady who lives next door. She loves the buddy.
I found an amazing day care for my buddy.
I got a new suit.
My dry cleaner lost my suit.
Then they bought me a new one.
I went to a Cal game at the Rose Bowl.
I drove to San Diego and back, just me and the Buddy.
Also did the same with Oxnard.
I made a gingerbread house.
I saw the Yankees at Yankee stadium twice.
I saw them at the Angels stadium once.
I saw them at Camden yards once.
And I saw the poor mets play at citifield.
I hosted both of the families for Thanksgiving dinner for the first time.
Buddy and I colored in a coloring book together for the first time.
Celebrated my first mother's day!
Watched the final season of Entourage. It got a little real, too. I didn't love that.
I missed my first season of True Blood. Just got too far behind, and couldn't catch up.
I still haven't found the saving grace of Los Angeles television to replace my beloved NY1.
We hosted several pumpkins for the autumn season, including one brought by my friend Patrick Paumberg who just moved to Germany.
Took Buddy trick or treating this year and also had a whole bunch of trick or treaters here at the pad.
Went to Vegas for the first time.
Went on my first bachelor/bachelor party trip and made dope pins of the couple for everyone to wear.
I wrote a blog entry that was supposed to be 111 things about 2011, but it turned out to be only 51.

Finished the Christmas cards - 88 sent out this year!
Purchased about five christmas gifts Sunday.
Went to my pal's coookie party downtown LA on Spring and 3rd Street. It's a beautiful old building, turned into a beautiful new loft.
Traded date night with our pals, so Friday night me and Babe went out to dinner while Buddy terrorized their two children, and Saturday night I went over and watched their TV while their two babies slept. I hope to do this every month, to be sure.
I made the mistake of making toffee bars yesterday, a recipe I will share with you because it is so easy it's painful. Why a mistake? Because I work from home. I've already had two "for breakfast."
My favorite pandora station of 2011 is Spoon Radio. It's great music to get your work done.

2011 has been one of the more challenging years on record for me and my nearest and dearest.

I've decided to start my closing-of-the-year entries by listing some of the great things that have happened in 2011.

I got a new niece and a new nephew this year.
I moved to California this year and now live within 100 miles of both of my sets of parents and my sisters.
I found an awesome house to rent that costs the same as my old spot in Brooklyn but has a backyard, three bedrooms and my own washer and dryer.
I got not one but two jobs to keep me super busy and to keep the paychecks coming this way.
Babe got a great job, super close to where we live and he is kicking its teeth in so far.
I found an awesome daycare for my buddy, steps away from my house, where she has so much fun all day, gets to play with lots of other kids, eats her veggies, and takes naps every day. It costs half of what my childcare cost in NYC, too, and thats for five days instead of four. She also makes me amazing art projects that I will cherish forever.
Speaking of my buddy, she is thriving. She has cousins here and lots of little friends who live close by.

Two new recipes

I tried two new recipes this week, how bout that, huh? How does she do it, you ask yourself? I don't know. Here's one, hopefully I'll get you the second one, too!

I made a variation of this recipe "Layered Mexican Bake."

My version:

Ingredients
1 pound extra-lean ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
2 colorful bell peppers peppers, chopped
2 1/2 cups chunky red salsa + Some taco sauce
1 can of black beans
6 corn tortillas
1 cup Light Sour Cream
1 1/2 cups Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese

Directions
HEAT oven to 375 degrees F.

BROWN meat with onions and peppers in large skillet on medium-high heat. Stir in taco sauce; cook 1 minute. Add salsa and black beans; mix well. Simmer 5 minutes.

SPREAD 2 cups meat sauce onto bottom of 13x9-inch baking dish; top with layers of 2 tortillas, 1 cup meat sauce, sour cream and 1/2 cup cheese. Cover with 2 tortillas, 2 cups of remaining meat sauce and half of remaining cheese; top with remaining tortillas and meat sauce. Cover with foil.

BAKE 30 minutes or until casserole is heated through. Top with remaining cheese; bake, uncovered, 5 min. or until melted.

This past weekend was pretty marvy, dude. Went down to San Diego on Saturday to watch my 8 year old niece perform in the Nutcracker. I really love the Nutcracker, we used to go every year when I was a kid because my sister was in it. It was awfully nice to be there and it was very festive.
The drive down to San Diego is perfect because if we leave at noon it is about exactly an hour and forty five minutes which is just as long as Buddy's nap. So she sleeps and we cruise down and have some nice time to catch up and chat.
Whilst in San Diego, we went to our favorite place on the planet, the Ballast Point Brewery eighteen steps away from where my mom and dad live. Then we went out to dinner with my sister.
Sunday, Ang came back up with us to LA and watched the buddy while Babe and I went out on a date. Two dates in two days. Wowee.
I'm working this week from home for USC. So far its kinda ouchie hard but I'm hoping to get into a rythm. I left the house for a coffee shop today so hopefully that is more inspiring and I can get more than one organization researched - like maybe two or three!

Why not make a Christmas list, right?

One of the biggest things I miss about NYC is the prevalence of delicious seltzer. So, my number one wish list item is a Soda Stream. Then, I can make my own seltzer and drink it all the time!
I always like jewelry, and think Tiffany's is a great place to get it!
I need a new travel coffee mug because the one I use every morning was compromised. Meaning, water got inside where there isn't supposed to be water and it was all grody. So I had to throw it away. Now, I am drinking out of a cute mug with snoopy, charlie brown and a christmas tree on it, but it doesn't keep my coffee warm.
I always get people delicious smelling lotions and soaps for the holidays and I like those things, too. For myself I mean. Not just for other people.
A new set of awesome knives that cut real well. For cooking.

Probably that's a good enough list. I don't really need anything for Christmas and it feels a little disingenuous to be making a Christmas list, but it's a fun exercise.

Wednesday Update

It's "cold" here. I use the quotes because cold is walking down Broadway with a windchill of 2 degrees and wet socks from slushy snow seeping in. Being that I live here, though, now, cold is 40s.
I am working on my proposal for USC and almost threw in the towel 18 times yesterday. Going to get it done today and send it off and if he doesn't like it, then FINE.
Dude. Pinterest is my new addiction. Don't go there. But, if you do, click my funny page, and laugh and laugh and laugh.

Numbers - one day late

I think I'm going to be one day late on Numbers from now on. Gives me a chance to digest the weekend. Sabes?
This past weekend, I went to Long Beach three times. For realsies. It's about 20 miles away, so not far, but kind of funny to keep going to there over and over and over. On Friday, Babe flew out of the LBC to fly up to the Bay to hang out with the homies. On Sat, I went to Cin's to meet the new baby who is tiny and precious. On Sun, I went to pick up Babe from the LBC airport. Thank goodness Buddy like the car or I would be screwed.
On Sat, I journeyed 47 miles up the coast to my homeland, beautiful Oxnard, California to spend the weekend with BFF's familials. We had a very nice and very chill weekend. Her husband the Doctor made us a delicious dinner, BFF and I strolled the Farmer's Market and I stopped in to see her folks. I managed to consume everything in sight while I was there, though, so am clearly fasting this week.
My attempts to get a tree have so far been foiled, but high prices or hour long lines. Babe is going today to pick up a tree and, in his words, nothing but death will keep him from them. We're lookin at a 7 or 8 footer me thinks.
I've been working on my proposal for USC for a couple of days and hope to finish it by tomorrow. It's hard but boy oh boy is it nice to work. Hate working? Be unemployed for several months and send out 48 job applications. That'll make you like it.

I am going to do a consulting gig for USC!
And then I am going to work at UCLA for a temporary position while this woman goes on mat leave. This should keep me employed until August 2012.
After 48 applications, these two gigs are with the first two folks I met with when I moved here. So there you have it.
We had a little power outage here in Culver City. I was pretty super excited. We had our candles going and were just sitting around talking. I was thinking long haul for sure, as I've been living in NYC for nearly a decade and when the power goes out, it's not a power outage, but a black out, and that shit goes on for days.
But then the power came back on.
I'm thinking of turning all the lights back off.
Hoping Buddy sleeps better tonight because last night? No bueno.
It's so windy here my gate outside keeps careening open, the lawn chairs in the backyard are somewhere down the street, and did I mention the power went out? Also, my allergies are kicking like Chuck Norris.

Sorry we're late! Buddy and I caught a wee tummy bug that set me back a day. She couldn't go to daycare yesterday, so you got no long blog post. I also had to reschedule two informational interviews. SIGH. We're better today though. Thank god that was a short bug, not a three day one.
The four day holiday weekend was terrific. Thanksgiving day we had mine and babe's family over. That made eight adults, two kids and two babies. We had a terrific meal, the food was good and the company was awesome. It's been nine years or so since I was home for Thanksgiving so it was a great homecoming, too.
The next day, we had over about twelve of our pals, plus about three or four babies. WOW! What a party. We all ate, drank, and had a beeday cake for babe.
The rest of the weekend we took it super easy. We were supposed to go tree shopping on Sunday but I was wiped out, both from so much hosting and that nasty little bug. It was nice to chill though for a couple of days.
Tomorrow, I have a meeting with USC, to hopefully lock down a consulting gig. Another meeting on Friday at UCLA to hopefully lock down some temporary employment. Cross your fingers yo! This would hopefully have me employed through August 2012.
Yesterday, Babe turned 34! Buddy turned seventeen months! Yay!

Today I'll express my thanks for having lived in New York City for the past nine years.

Because I lived in NYC:

I met some of the smartest, nicest and most fun people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.
I had a great job where I was able to be a senior staff member to one of the top research organizations in the country and help grow it from tiny to much bigger.

Because I lived in NYC:

I have no sense of sticker shock. I can't find things that are "expensive" here, because they are 10% cheaper than everything I paid for for the last nine years.
I don't think the drivers are bad here. After the shit show (excuse me) that was the streets of NYC, the people here drive like they are going to church on a sunday.

Because I lived in NYC:

I appreciate the weather here in Southern California.
I appreciate the quiet at night.
I appreciate my backyard and the spacious play space it provides for my buddy.

Because I lived in NYC:

Now I can miss it and think about it whenever I want.

I'd like to spend the week being thankful.

So, for my first day of thanks, I'm thankful for my sisters.

Here's my sister JOY, who lives in upstate NY. She is pictured here with her beautiful daughters and my baby, Buddy. Her third baby is not in this picture, but trust me. She's just as pretty as the other ones. I've been thinking of JOY a lot lately, but particularly today. I am very thankful to have her in my life.

Here's my middle Sister, Ang. She's cuddling with my Buddy. Ang and I have always been a duo, a team. She never thinks twice about giving up a weekend to take care of The Stinker. I am very thankful to have her in my life, and feel so grateful to live a mere 1 hour and thirty minutes away from her. What's that you say? San Diego is 2 hours away? Not the way my sister drives.

And here's my sister Sunny with her beautiful children. We share books, recipes, and clothing. She has been a mentor and bestie to me for a long, long time. Which is funny because we're so very young. I am very thankful to have her close by and that we are both unemployed at present because we can spend literally hours on the phone together all the time.

I could say so much more about these sisters of mine, and these pithy comments can't do them justice. But today I just want to say how thankful I am to have sisters. My life is better for it. I am a better person because of it.

What a wonderful weekend! We spent our first weekend at home, just the three of us.
We played in the backyard, went to a couple of stores, watched a ton of football, hung out.
Saturday, we had a spontaneous Big Game watching party with Cin, Omar and Santi. Cal lost, but the score was 28-31 so that was nearly a victory in my opinion!
I narrowed down 900 pictures to 64 to send out to the Buddy Fan Club.
I started planning for Thanksgiving Dinner where we'll have 8 adults, two kids and two babies over for dinner.
It rained all day yesterday and that was the first good rain we've had since I moved here. It was lovely - we played inside and stayed dry.

Good, Bad, Ugly

The Good

I made banana bread this week and it is good.
It's in the 60s here and sunny. You heard me.
Lots of kettles boiling, irons in the fire, buns in the oven (wait - not for me), in terms of the job situation.
Buddy has a little tiny ponytail now.

The Bad

When buddy doesn't like what is going on - say Mama is doing the dishes, or I want her to sit in her stroller, she becomes a noodle/snake like object and makes this big noise that sounds like EEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHH and it is no bueno.

The Ugly

My heating bill is going to be ugly. I've had central heating for the past nine years and it has been paid for by someone else. I'm sure the costs were rolled into my rent, etc., but I still didn't get a bill. Despite it being relatively warm in So Cal, my house is made of a very fine paper and it gets down to about the 40s at night, so that means it cold in here. That bill aint gonna be pretty.

Numbers part II - job update

I have submitted forty-six job applications so far. I put Buddy in daycare on October 1st, so that's when I really started focusing on this search. Six weeks ago.
I've had three interviews with one non profit, and they are going to let me know if the coming week or so what the status is. I really hope I get that job so I can stop looking. Also because its a good job and the people seem really nice.
On average, I've had one informational interview or meeting every two weeks.
I had an in person interview a few weeks ago with a place, but they said no.
A pal of mine, early on, said, listen, I bet you will send out about fifty job applications and get 2 or 3 interviews. She was 100% right. She didn't tell me any odds on getting hired, though.
I may or may not start doing some consulting work for this one organization that called me. But, they are a bunch of hippies and I'm not sure how much they are willing to pay me.
I had wanted a job before Thanksgiving because I was worried that once we got into the holidays people wouldn't be hiring as much. Today is November 15th. Here's hoping, you guys!

Back on track this week, girls. This past weekend, I did a nice turnaround trip to San Diego to celebrate my mom's 40th birthday. (Wait...what?) Me and the buddy drove down on Friday during her nap and came back after her bathy on Saturday night. It was a very relaxing day and a half with my familials. We had a nice dinner at my ma's, went out to a casual lunch on Saturday, and I basically just hung out with family. It rained a lot for San Diego, so that was sort of surreal.
Yesterday, Babe drove to see his peeps out in Hemet, so me and the Buddy experimented with Culver City public transportation. You know - the bus. It costs $1.00, has no apparent schedule and took me right to the farmer's market.
My dear friend Gabby came over on Thursday and we stayed up til 1:30 talking outside in my backyard. She and I have been friends for close to thirty years - we met in kindergarten. You'd think we wouldn't have that much to talk about, but you'd be probably wrong about that.
I had a pretty good job interview that Thursday. I'm up to 44 jobs applied for. This morning, I am at the coffee shop and I'm looking to add 3-5 to that total. I'm also doing a ton of networking and just meeting with people, so something should come up pretty soon? Right?

Yesterday was the first Halloween that I got to hand out candy and I can't wait to do it again! We took Buddy to just a house or two, but she helped me pass out candy to trick or treaters.

This past weekend was another friend explosion! We went to the Cal game which was horrible because Cal sucks, but we had a great time with our pals tailgating at the rose bowl! We ate dip and sandwiches and drank beer, with four Cal alumni and two other great pals.
We also had over Cin, Omar and Santi on Sunday and took them to the farmers market where it had to be more than 80 degrees. HOT, but no complaints. Not from these lips.
I bought a second dress for the wedding this weekend. I hope one of them is perfect.

Buddy is growing by leaps and bounds people. Starting yesterday, you can say to her "what noise does a cow make?" and she'll answer "moooooooo."

Every time she sees a doggie she says, "woof woof woof," and every time she sees an owl she says, "whoooo."

Then, she sat in her chair saying her name.

Reuben Casserole Recipe

Thanks to MIL for this one! I made some changes, so I'll give you the recipe the way I made it!

Reuben Casserole

1/2 cup sour cream (I use light, as if that makes a difference. You'll see.)
1/2 cup 1,000 Island Dressing
1 pound corned beef from the deli
1 cup sauerkraut
6 slices of rye bread, cubed.
1/4 cup butter, melted
2 cups swiss cheese

Preheat oven to 350.
Use a 9x9 casserole dish. Mix up the sauerkraut with the dressing and the sour cream. Put that on the bottom of the dish. Layer the corned beef and the cheese. I added a little bit of sharp cheddar for the heck of it.
Toss the bread with the butter, cover the casserole with that.
Bake for 30 minutes, covered, then another 10-15 uncovered.

Viola! Delicious casserole.

If you can find fresh baked rye bread, use it. So few ingredients in this casserole, you'll want each one to be the best you can find.

Excuse my tardiness people. Yesterday, I had to take my computer to the doctor for the first time! She wasn't charging right. So they gave her a new power cord.
This past weekend we had a mini shower for my pal who is having her second baby in two months! Wow! Lotsa second babies happening! No fear, blog readers. Not my second baby. Not for some time.
I made a reuben casserole and I will share the recipe on my 2nd blog post today. To make up for no post yesterday.
Sunday, we had the newlyweds come over for a bit and we all went to the farmers market. They are the folks whose wedding we attended about three weeks ago.
Afterwards, me and Buddy took a long nap. She slept for three hours, I slept for one.
Then, we went by our pal's house to watch the football game and meet their pals, all who had babies. So there were about 6 babies running around? I don't know. Anything more than three feels like six.

A flick, a book, a show

A flick

I watched my annual movie! A pal at Babe's work loaned him Bridesmaids, so we took it in. (I was going to link to BFF's review of it, but I can't find it. BFF?) It was super hilarious, really gross at parts, with a little bit of romantic comedy mixed it. The main person, Kristen Wiig, is so darn funny I can't even stand it.

A book

I've been reading about three or four random books a week. Like, I go to the library with the Buddy strapped to my chest and pick up five of the easiest to reach books with the prettiest covers and take them home. Many aren't very good. But, I read a really good book called Cleaning Nabakov's House about a woman who lives in upstate New York, gets a divorce and loses her kids in the custody battle, then proceeds to work on getting them back. That sounds very serious, though, and this book is far lighter than that. Her writing reminds me a little bit of my comedic hero Tina Fey in the way she refers to things, like her one pair of presentable pants which she calls "The Pants" and her ex husband who she calls the experson. Anyways, it's good. Read it.

A show

Anyone else watching the new Buffy (SMG, not BFF's husband) show Ringer on that marvel of television, the CW? It's twisted, soapy, sexy, and full of images of my old place of residence NYC. So far, I like it a lot. But, I kinda just love SMG, so would probably be pretty happy watching her in whatever she was in.

Job Update (numbers round II?)

I have applied to twenty-five jobs.
I have had two phone interviews.
I have had one in-person interview (UCLA) and I was not selected. I was his second choice, however, so that's not bad.
I have seen only about three rejections in my email, which means people have very few manners when it comes to the hiring process.
I would like to be employed before the holidays because I feel like once that happens, it's going to be until January 2012 that I get a job.
I have one iron in the fire at a place that might hire me if they can scrape together the funding.
All this job searching has given me a couple of new allies here in LA that I didn't even know before moving here, but are now helping me get a job. Nice.
I still have a lot of connections to make and people to meet with, so am far from feeling desperation. It's only been about ten weeks that I've been looking and I'd say that's a lot of progress.

Last week was one for the books. I'm glad it's over and done with.
But, this weekend was beyond terrific. Babe, Buddy and I were home for the first time solo since we moved here. Is that true? Feels that way.
Ang came up on Friday to watch the buddy while I had an all day conference with 700 affordable housing folks. That evening, she stayed home to mind the buddy's sleeping habits while babe and I went out dinner. Heck yeah we did. We went to Waterloo & City just up the street. He got some pasta with lobster and I got a pizza with green chorizo and an egg on it. Both of those things were good, good, good. Plus they easily have the best beer list I've seen so far in LA.
On Saturday, we hung out and took it easy, then went by the LACMA for my pal Jenny's 30-something birthday. We saw a beautiful exhibit about California from the 30s to the 50s.
Then, me and Babe went to Bevmo for the 5cent wine sale. Do you know about this? You get one bottle of wine and the next one is 5cents. So, we got a 30 dollar bottle of wine for 5cents. Yah. Awesome.
Sunday we went to a pumpkin patch, a park, watched football, and had two visitors! My pal Patricio who I have known for about twenty years came by with his lovely wife. Awesome.

Sorry I missed my blog update yesterday. It's because the Buddy has the croup.

You heard me. Apparently I live in 19th Century England. Or the 20s. I don't know. The croup.

I woke up in the middle of the night, not last night but the night before, and buddy was as hot as a little pinto bean. I dont know what that means, exactly, but she felt hot and little like a bean. And, she sounded exactly like Darth Vader. I am not exaggerating. I don't mean she had a barking cough, I mean she sounded like she was breathing through a giant black mask about the give orders to blow up some rebels. (Rebels? Right Babe?)

So, we took her to the emergency room. First time. 5am.

She has the croup. Which means her windpipe is all swollen. So, it sounds REALLY bad, and it can be, but rarely. Like, most kids with the croup just stay home from school for a few days and then it goes away. Every parent of every child who has had it, though, will tell you that it is the scariest illness they get. They sound like they can't get any air. I won't say much more. Because it's too horrible. She got a shot at the hospital and is totally on the mend. Her fever is gone, she doesn't sound like a Sith Lord. She's eating her eggo in her monkey pajamas watching me type.

But, no daycare this week. So that isn't muy bueno for me. But, it's okay.

My oldest pal game down - not that she is super old, Ha!, we've just been friends for a long long time. Since Kindergarten, so I guess that's about 25 years? I got to meet her baby who is two months older than the buddy. Boy is she just a cutie pie.
Friday night we went to a meet & greet pizza party at Buddy's daycare. Met the other moms and dads and stuff. There were two other sets of parents who also just moved here, so that was nice.
Saturday, we went and walked around Venice Beach some. There's a cute street called Abbot Kinney Blvd. with lots of shops and restaurants, etc. We stopped for a couple of scoops of ice cream and it was deeeelicous.
I just had to go get buddy from daycare because she has a fever! Poor little thing. It's 100.6, and I gave her tylenol and now she's taking a nap. I imagine it's because she is getting one new giant molar. Man, teething is a real bitch.

Jane Says!

Grown up Sasha (GUS) was the winner of two free tickets to see Jane's Addiction at the Ford Theater in Hollywood!

And she took me!

We went to this beautiful outdoor amphitheater, which was tiny, and grabbed a seat right smack in the middle and watched the show.

Jane's Addiction had three albums when I was in college, and we listened to all of them all the time. There is not a guitar riff that I am not familiar with on those albums. So, it was really fun to see it in person. For a second time! GUS (and others) and I saw Jane's at the Enid Festival in the late nineties in San Francisco.

They played everything from Ocean Size to Three Days, to a few off their new album.

The crowd was a little bit quiet, but we had a great time!

Buddy and I had her first cold of her second year this past weekend. She's doing much better now and so am I. I think Babe probably has it, now.
I dropped her off at daycare for her official first day today.
This past weekend, we went to Idyllwild for a wedding. Did you know that it is one mile high? It was absolutely beautiful. Babe's oldest friend, of about twenty years, got married. It was a lovely ceremony, and very small. About fifty people and the couple wed near a beautiful creek. I would like to go back to Idyllwild and stay there for a while.
We drove to Hemet on Friday and that is 100 miles away and took us more than three hours to get there. It took us exactly two hours to get home from Idyllwild yesterday, which is forty minutes east of Hemet. Friday afternoon drives? No thank you.
It is so quiet here without my buddy. It could also be that my ears are still plugged up from the drive down the mountain, coupled with still being a little sick.

I sure do love baseball, you guys! The Rays won against the Yankees in a nail biter and the Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox. What the hell? I was happy for the Rays, they are kinda my second favorite baseball team. Even though I guess it would be easier for the Yanks to beat the Red Sox in the playoffs, but it's the playoffs. Who wants easier?
Do you know what show I love? Chopped on the Food Network. Why? I have no idea. But a bunch of chefs running around trying to make a delicious meal out of kettle corn, white fish, macaroons and fresh mint is incredibly entertaining.
So far, since I moved to California from NYC three months ago, I've seen about ten friends from NYC. Here's to living in a place that people want to visit!
I've read about fifteen books in the last two months. At some point, I'll provide a list and some recommendations. As for now, I can say thank you library. You make it easy to read a ton of books even though I have no money to buy them.
I'm excited for the buddy to start daycare, but I definitely already cried today when she and I were dancing around the house. I just love her so much. Too bad I can't look for a job and take care of a fifteen month old.
Yeah, she's fifteen months today. I totally dumped my plan to not call her by how many months she is. When your buddy is under two years, it's just how you roll. Truth! I speak it.
Other things I'm watching on TV besides baseball: Ringer - the new Buffy show, Survivor and Yo Gabba Gabba. Ha!
